East County Communication Covenant

Purpose

As a spiritually diverse, Christ-centered community, we are rooted in the sacred mystery of God as revealed in Jesus. What holds us together is not agreement on every question, but a shared life of love, reverence, and belonging.

In a world often fractured by division, we seek to be a safe harbor for reconciliation and a light that reflects God’s inclusive love. By honoring our many stories and practicing ongoing discernment, we strive to create a space where everyone feels safe to speak honestly and to listen with curiosity and depth. We covenant to practice these ways of speaking, listening, and repairing relationships. We trust that Christ meets us not at the edges of agreement, but at the center of a shared table.

Like us, this covenant is a living document that will continue to grow. It is accompanied by “Living the Covenant,” a practical guide to faithful conversation and reconciliation in our community.

Our Shared Commitments

As a community, we recognize that these commitments are a journey we take together. We will not embody them perfectly, but we commit to practicing them with humility, trusting God’s ongoing work among us.

Together, we commit to:

  • Cultivate belonging. We value relationships over being right and seek to create a community where every person knows they belong.
  • Honor every person’s story. We listen with curiosity and compassion, seeking to understand rather than defend. We recognize that each of us is continually growing and changing.
  • Make space for every voice. We trust that the Holy Spirit works through every member of the community, and we intentionally listen to those who have felt silenced, overlooked, or hesitant to speak, as we grow in our awareness of power, position, and the differences that may impact our communication.
  • Acknowledge harm with humility. We assume good intent while remaining open to the impact of our words. When harm occurs, we seek first to acknowledge another’s experience before explaining our own intentions and perspective.
  • Receive feedback as an opportunity for growth. We welcome honest reflection, trusting that God can use it to strengthen our community and continually form us into the image of Christ.
  • Choose courage over perfection. We value vulnerability and commit to using words that build one another up. Acknowledging that imperfect language will happen along the way, we extend grace to one another as we learn and grow together.
  • Seek understanding through thoughtful communication. We bring concerns to those involved using the mode of communication that best fits the situation. Knowing that some conversations are hard or require extra care, we welcome involving a shepherd or trusted mentor for support and safety along the way.
  • Pursue repair and reconciliation. We move toward one another with openness, kindness, humility, and a willingness to learn, seeking restoration whenever possible.
